I love summer crochet garments, don’t you?

It seems like summer is not the time for crochet, most people think of chunky mittens and scarves, big comfy afghans and warm oversize sweaters, all designed to keep you warm and toasty in the winter.

Living living in Florida where it literally never gets cold, has forced me to get creative with my crochet pattern designs and find a way to create a beautiful crochet garment that you’ll love to wear, even in the hot months!

The most important element of a great summer crochet top is the yarn, hands down. Yes, you need to utilize lacy open stitches so the piece is breathable, but you can’t always do that throughout the top if you want full coverage. You have to choose the right yarn if you want your finished crochet top to be really wearable in summer months.

I can’t emphasize enough how important your choice of yarn is when crocheting a summer garment. My go to summer fibers are cotton, silk, most lace weight yarns, or even bamboo. While there are caveats to each of these, I’ll leave all those details for a more in-depth post on yarn choices, fibers, substitutions, etc. For now, we’ll focus on the yarn I used for The Lemon Drop Top.

The Yarn

I often look to my Scheepjes yarn stash when my design idea calls for something colorful, light-weight and super high-quality. For the Lemon Drop Top, I chose Scheepjes Secret Garden, a remarkably soft, yet sturdy, light-weight yarn that is available in 9 stunning color choices.

Secret Garden has a variegated, almost tweedy effect. It’s a DK weight silk/cotton blend. I love how Secret Garden is light, cool and colorful, which makes it an ideal choice for warm weather shawls and tops.
